At Moonkind Studios, we’re deeply committed to sustainability. From the materials we use to our production practices, we aim to be as eco-friendly as possible.

Here’s how we’re making a difference:

Eco-Friendly Materials

Gypsum/Polymer Composite: Our primary material is a non-toxic, water-based composite made of 60% gypsum and 40% acrylic polymer. This eco-resin is solvent-free and emits no volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Gypsum, a commonly used and sustainable material, combined with water-based acrylic polymer, offers an excellent alternative to toxic epoxy resins. This blend allows us to create a variety of durable products that last a long time, promoting sustainability through longevity. Moreover, we can break down and reuse this composite, ensuring minimal waste.

PLA: We also use PolyLactic Acid (PLA), a biodegradable polymer made from renewable resources like corn and sugar canes, instead of traditional petroleum-based plastics. While PLA is biodegradable, it requires specific conditions to break down effectively so we use nearby recycling services to ensure our waste is taken care of correctly. 

Sustainable Practices

Production: We produce only what we need, reducing excess and waste. Any leftover or broken materials are saved and reused in future projects, ensuring that nothing useable goes to waste. Our goal is to create products that our customers will cherish and use for a long time. We also strive to incorporate recycled, recyclable, biodegradable, and sustainable materials in every aspect of our business, from creation to delivery.

PLA Recycling: Currently, there are many PLA recycling services available. A quick search for "PLA recycling" in your country can provide local options. For instance, we have a nearby recycling service in Essex, though our minimal waste has not necessitated its use yet. Additionally, a local council offers PLA recycling, further supporting our sustainability efforts.

Minimal Waste Commitment

Our production process minimises waste as everything is made to order. We are working towards a closed-loop manufacturing process, which will allow us to reuse any PLA waste in new products through methods like injection moulding and homemade filament extruding.

Customer Engagement

We'd love our customers to join us in our sustainability efforts too. If you wish to dispose of a PLA/Jesmonite product purchased from us, we will happily cover the shipping costs for you to send it back. This ensures that the product is recycled or appropriately disposed of, and it may even be used to create new items.

Greenspark Initiative

As part of our dedication to sustainability, we are proud members of the Greenspark Initiative. For each order placed with Moonkind Studios, we contribute to planting a tree and rescuing five plastic bottles from the ocean. This initiative helps us offset our environmental footprint and supports broader efforts to protect and restore our planet.

Ongoing Environmental Efforts

Even with all the above, we know that we can do more and we want to as well. We continuously explore and implement other sustainable practices wherever possible. Our goal is to integrate sustainability into every facet of our business, ensuring that our impact on the planet is as positive as possible.
